Would argue culture/feel of regions is often more defined by economy/education/people than just architecture....
Most people in FF started their careers in NYC's financial industry; most commute daily into Manhattan; many who work in FF work for hedge funds founded by guys who also began their careers in Manhattan....
Economically speaking, NE is dominated by Bos region....sure, many in FF are Harvard grads, but most talented Harvard grads migrate to NYC after graduation....and most talented MIT grads seem to migrate to SiliconValley after graduation...and Harvard and MIT's students are drawn heavily from regions like NYC, Chicago, SF, etc
Any economically powerful region, such as Manhattan/FF/SiliconValley, tends to attract talented people from all over globe, so provincial categories become more difficult to define....

Exactly! Most gringos in Spanish-style homes in Arizona have next to nothing to do with Mexico! Same goes for most in Fairfield living in "New England" colonials.
Still doesn't change the fact that NY (largest city in the nation) has strong influence over your day-to-day life, and almost everybody's, in FF County--it doesn't matter if you love it or hate it.
Somehow I manage to avoid a NYC influence in my daily life; I read Connecticut newspapers, and watch Connecticut news channels. I am in Northern Fairfield County.
I don't think its an either or type of thing. To me, Stamford has more of a NYC feel, but Monroe, Stepney, etc., feel much more New England. I kind of believe that FFld Cty is a hybrid of NYC-- access to culture, great restaurants, convenience to airports-- and New England -- bucoloic rolling hills, greenery, sense of community yet privacy-- all rolled in to one.
