does anyone know what grocery store will be replacing the former a&p?

i live in the area and have seen revnovations taking place since last month. the new facade is green and orange which i thought was the colours of 'shaws' but apparently it is not shaws opening there.

i drove up to the doors earlier today looking for clues but found none. i sometimes shopped at the former a&p (as much as i despised that place but they had some good sales) so am real curious as to what new grocery store will be coming to my area.

thanks

thanks

I'm sure its still owned by A&P, and will be reopened as a Food basics. I've seen job openings for the same address advertised as food basics.

I can confirm this. I work at an A&P store in Connecticut and they posted a sign for full time job openings at the new Food Basics store in Bridgeport. I suppose they wanted to start over and take the store in a new direction as a discount version of A&P. From what I've seen, they have really good prices and they still carry their America's Choice and other house brands, but for much cheaper. This is the first Food Basics in CT, so I don't know if their prices here will be as low as in New Jersey, but it'll be interesting. They should open additional FB stores in CT where A&Ps used to operate that are still vacant. The discount food business is a big thing these days. They'd clean up.

It still amazes me that they finally closed the regular run down A&P and are actually going to invest in the location. Does the store look better so far than it was, or is it the same??

I read that A&P was opening a lower-end store there to replace the old one. There was a whole article in the Connecticut Post about the history of the site, going back to its opening in 1958.

I live pretty close to there, about 2 miles away.

That supermarket was originally called King Cole. I don't think it was part of a chain back then and it certainly was not an A&P. It was however the largest and most modern supermarket in Connecticut. Bought grociers were placed in these little bins and then sent via conveyor belt under ground to a building in the middle of the parking lot where you would drive up and they would load your grociers into your car. It was pretty neat. As a kid I always wanted to jump in one of the bins for a ride but that was not allowed. It is kind of sad how rundown the place got over the years though. Definitely time for a redo. Jay

so far the outside has been repainted like an off white with a bright green and orange stripe along the facade. they are now working on the interior. looks very eye catching.

wish i could find the job postings online. my 15yo needs a job

That's right. I had forgotten that the old name was King Cole. It was a great store back then, but it went downhill over the years. I was never actually in the store, but I drove by it occasionally. I usually shop at the Stop & Shop on Villa Avenue in Fairfield or on Madison Avenue in Bridgeport.
