Problems w/garmin express (cable, installation, GPS)

Hi all.
Thanks for all your help in setting me up w/GPS
& cables. Someone recommended that I go to
A garmin forum as my nuvi 50lm was all messed up.
Exchanged for a new one anyway then read in forums
That us map installation via garmin express
Was messed up. They suggest using "map installer the
Old way". I'm new so don't know exactly what this is about
But people are pretty upset about it.
