I just got a new Samsung 5000 TV. When I scanned for channels, you can select Cable STD, HRC or IRC. I tried it with STD and it only added 3 analog channels! However I could go to any channel manually.

I tried rescanning with it set for HRC. This time, it worked and scanned all the channels I should receive.

I've done the same thing with Sony or Vizio TVs. They never asked for HRC or STD, yet they scanned everything in okay. Why can't the Samsung be automatic about it?? Most people won't know what HRC even is.

Before you switched to IRC did you get any channels that didn't have audio? A buddy has a small no-name TV that gets many channels but some don't have audio.

It only added the most basic analog channels and there was sound.
I think your friend has a totally different problem from me.

He does. I now know it's on an older TV with no QAM or ATSC tuners.
