You can access Netflix from a Bluray with wifi as well. It is like having a computer on your TV, most include fitness, Pandora, etc. Some apps cost and some are included. So essentially like a tablet or smartphone with apps on your TV.
The blu ray player plays blu rays in addition to having apps such as Netflix, Hulu, etc. If you plan to exclusively stream and don't need the blu ray function, the Roku is probably the better option since it's interface tends to be faster and more user friendly than most blu ray players' app hubs.
Also the BluRay player will have like 10 stream "channels". Maybe 20. Roku has 2,000. Yes, many aren't great but if even 20% are decent that's a helluva lot more then the Bluray. And Roku adds channels weekly it seems. A bluray will hardly ever add more.
Many Blu-Ray players only have certain internet apps installed, with no option of adding more. Roku devices have access to far more apps and channels, with more being added everyday. In particular, the games are seldom, if ever, found on Blu-Ray players.
The Roku remote is also more capable than most Blu-Ray remotes (e.g. gyroscopic sensors and headphone jacks.)
In addition, on some blu-ray players, the channels are permanent. So, if that channels goes belly-up or disappears it may stay as a displayed option even though it goes nowhere when pressed.
Another item about Roku is there is this thing called Private Channels. These are feeds that do not show up on the Roku streaming channel menus but can be programmed into Roku if you have the channel code. Granted Roku does have some weird channels available on their menus and many private channels are even weirder, but they are entertaining!
Just bought a Samsung J5700 Blu Ray. Looks like the only app with free content is Youtube.
It says on the box there are 250+ apps. On the screen there are about 10. Some have a free trial.
Re a different thread - I have a disc with 4:3 content and some 16:9 content. I have to manually switch between them, on the TV remote. Also, the 16:9 content now fills the entire screen and is the right aspect. On the upconverting DVD player, it had black bars on all four sides.
Have you ever used the USB input on a BluRay for Photos, Music or Videos?
Why would you want to use that instead of other devices? Maybe just for the big screen.
I'm disappointed the front panel has no info at all - not even a power indicator.
Also no running time always displayed on the unit panel.

If you put a flash drive onto the Bluray, it copies all the files onto the player? Or are there options?
