I just got a Samsung J5700 Bluray player. If you're playing a Bluray disk and stop it in the middle (by pressing Stop), you can't restart it from that point. It starts back at the beginning of the disk. (If you press Pause, it does restart where you paused it.)

The funny thing is, this is only true of a Bluray disk. If you stop an older DVD, you CAN restart it where you stopped it. Why would that be?

More exactly, when I press Stop, it displays the home screen with Disk, Photos, Videos and Apps. And if I press Enter (with disk highlighted) or Play, it starts at the beginning, if it's a Bluray.

My previous DVD players were all Sony and if you pressed Stop, it would say "Disk will restart where you stopped it" but if you pressed Stop twice, you could only restart at the beginning.

You were expecting a standard behavior across all manufacturers' software?

Almost all modern DVD players will resume where you left off.
Even if you remove the DVD and put it back in.

I found some threads saying that a lot of Bluray players will NOT resume if you press Stop. I'm not sure which ones, but it has to do with software.

Many of the newer players have memory buffers. As I mentioned in another thread, I purchased a LG. Recently we had a storm come through which caused a power outage for about 15 minutes. So the unit was completely off. When the power came back on the player started back up and started playing from the point it lost power.

Another reason to avoid Samsung. The more I read about the company, the less impressed I am.

This is a known issue with Blu-ray and has nothing to do with Samsung. My Sony player functions the same way. DVDs re-start from where you stopped, most Blu-rays do not.

A search on the subject will yield lots of stories of the same frustration. Apparently, it has something to do with the BD-Java software used on many/most Blu-ray disks.

With my new Bluray, I have to use the TV remote to switch between 16:9 or 4:3 when playing different disks (by pressing P Size).
When I had the Sony upconverting DVD player, this was always automatic. Why would that be??

Check your player's screen or picture settings for aspect ratio.

I just downloaded your player's manual and I see that it is grossly inferior to Sony's. So it is not at all clear exactly what your options are. That surprises me because I have a Samsung TV - about 9 years old, one of the early HDTV models, and its manual is excellent. Still looks and works just like the day I brought it home.

Anyway, play around with your picture settings options and my guess is that you'll find one that plays each disk with its original aspect ratio.
