I have a Samsung TV (smart) and use wireless headphones. If I have the TV speaker on mute and then connect the headphones, it overrides the mute. Beause of that, I'd wonder if there was a different setting for audio output that you may have turned off somehow.
We also have one off-brand ROKU TV that will occasionally lose audio altogether, and the only fix is to remove power for a few seconds and plug it back in. Just power cycling doesn't work.

The Samsung TV should have audio settings that you can check. I assume your headphones are Bluetooth?
What happens if you mute your TV speakers again after connecting headphones?

A little test this afternoon...
If I mute the TV speakers and then connect the BT wireless, that overrides the mute and I get audio in the headphones, but the little 'mute' icon on the TV still shows muted. Hitting the mute button at that point will mute the headphones.
Regardless of whether or not the BT is muted, when disconnected the TV goes back to the state it was in prior to the connection.
That's difficult to put into words and makes my head hurt!

Check the TV settings or better yet lookup the manual and read there. Post the model of the TV here and we can look it up to maybe clear up some confusion.
