I thought it would be interesting to start up a thread concerning this subject , since it seems to be rather underrated .

So AFAIK the first such alleged " pygmy burial ground " was discovered in 1820 near Sparta TN and became an overnight sensation , with many newspapers writing about it and related issues 50 years after the Civil War had ended .

Naturally it was later on discovered that the bones unearthed were those of Native American children , placing this event within the category of a hoax/pseudo scientific archaeology , though IIRC the folkloric significance of the affair wasn't diminished as a result .

At any rate feel free to post whatever you wish that's relevant to this topic and I'll be adding on to it soon enough as well .

I think it is just a matter of wishful thinking and a lack of information and technology that kept the stories going. Not much unlike the Adena Giants of Kentucky, and the Bigfoot Lady in Algood.
People like a mystery and the unknown and folklore.

Yes I do believe this event is considered one of the biggest hoaxes to have ever occurred in Tennessee .

As an aside I'd like to pose the following questions :

Has anyone here ever visited this site in question and if so what was your experience like ?

Also is this subject still a part of local mention in Tennessee , especially in and around the Sparta area ?

I have not and I have never heard any discussion about it locally. It has been some time since I have frequented Sparta though.
