I just heard from a coworker who recently made a trip to Port A that you can't get out of your car on the ferry ride anymore. Is this true? It has been probably 15 yrs since I was on that ferry and it was so much fun to get out and watch the birds.

It's such a short trip that it really isn't worth it. I was on it a couple weeks ago and people were getting out. YMMV.

And the dolphins that used to swim alongside the ferry. It was fun to spot them in the water.

Used to? They still do but it often depends on when they are feeding and the tidal flow.

Isn't worth it? Its free. And fun to see the dolphins. One of the few things I've found that was more fun was when they would swim right alongside my sailboat on Aransas Bay. You could almost reach out and touch them as they rolled over on one side to look at you out of one eye. They were as curious about us as we were about them.

I see your point. If you're in a hurry, and don't have the time to sit in the park and watch them, seeing them from the boat can be fun.
But if you're really wanting to see them, then the ferry ride is pretty short.
Hell, go kayaking on the lighthouse lakes. Then they might come up and play with you in your *** while you're in the channel.

It has been officially against policy for many years, over 30 at least. I can recall being told to stay in the car back in the 80's, but not consistantly. It is seldom enforced, and usually only when conditions are rough or they are running fast due to long lines.
