We are cruising on a Carnival cruise. We were assigned an 8:15 time for dinner. Does that mean we can not go to the main dining room earlier and stand inline and wait an available table? We have only cruised NCL and Holland America before and never had an assigned eating time on those lines.

Typically, you cannot get a table before your assigned dining time because the passengers assigned to the earlier dining time are still eating.

NCL does not have assigned dining times - part of their "freestyle cruising" concept.

On HAL, you must have selected their "as you wish" dining program. You might call carnival or your TA to see if they have a similar option on your ship.

Carnival has a "pick" your own time, in one of the main dinning rooms, Just indicate in your online profile.

You can ask (Good idea) to be placed in the same waiter section, so you have the same waiter/Asst-Bus Waiter.

To be placed at your "own" table or be seated with another family. (and Yes or No to kids)

Change to "Anytime Dining" and you can go whenever you want. No preset time or schedule to follow.

If this is what you want, consider that you will likely have different wait staff for each meal. If you want to have the same people each night, stick with an assigned time.

Yeah, I never understood why having the same wait staff is important. They just bring the food.

In the old days, before gratuities were automatic, it was important. Today, I think it matters to those people who enjoy or expect the 'help' to suck up to them.

My parents enjoy having a rapport with their server. I just assumed that was an older person thing but maybe it's just them.

I suspect you are right. Folks enjoy the faux camaraderie. I do not.

We had an assigned time, but IIRC we showed up at different times and never had a problem getting a table.
