Perhaps not. I say that because the score also presented Western Hills coach an opportunity to let as many kids play as the coach for the winning team. Hell if I was 40 points down at the half, I would put in the 5th string and give them a chance to actually play in a game, hell what would he have to lose?
From the newspaper (the Texas one, not the AP version of story)
The coach had pulled the starters, and then the 2nd then the 3rd string in.
Most HS teams don't have more then a 3rd string. The 3rd String is the Freshman Team players.
Oh man. It'd be bad enough to be one of the players on the losing team come Monday at school when everyone gives you crap for losing that bad. But the flack they'll catch for having their mommies and daddies cry "bully" on their behalf? Congrats, parents. You just made it worse.
Oh boohoo. The kids in school now are going to be the weakest, most worthless beings that have ever walked this planet. But they will be very sensitive.
"Bullying" is quickly becoming one of the most over-used and misused terms in society...and in my opinion it runs the risk of minimizing real bullying situations and also unnecessarily complicates coming up with ways to address bullying.
My (teenage) son's soccer team was beating their opponent 8-1 (that's a serious drubbing in soccer) and our HC told them to stop scoring and simply play keep-away. The other team's players actually got real angry because they want to keep trying to play the game the correct way.
The losing football team needs to use this as a lesson in perseverance because there'll always be someone who's better than they are. If you don't want them to score on you anymore, play harder to stop them!
Btw, we had a rematch several weeks later in a pre-lim and they beat us to knock us out of contention. They were so elated ... it was as if they've won the tournament itself.
For some reason this makes me think of when a team allows a terminally ill or special needs child to score a touchdown as a feel-good gesture.
Is that what the parent who made the complaint wants their child compared to?
Competition is something that is all around us. When this child applies for a job, they will face other applicants who have prepared more and earned better grades. When they are working, they will be helping their company compete against others who want as much market share as possible. And heaven forbid they get sent off to war, where the enemy will not stop shooting just because you are out of bullets.
It's not bullying. It is a lesson in competition for the players.
They could have done a lot of things. However, being opposing football teams they decided to keep playing football. One team kept scoring. So the losing team needs to go back to the room, realize they got their butts kicked, and use it as motivation to work harder and strive for better.
