When you see the shacks that people live in... Yes, they might be little tourist traps, but the sales put food on the table for people living in those 3rd world countries. Everyone involved in the tourist trade benefits, so I don't mind buying a few souvenirs if it helps people get by.

Perhaps cruisers WILL "ruin" Havanah, but not because of your notions listed, perhaps it will be because Cuba doesn't HAVE any of the Americanized popular cruise based shops. . . you can use the rest of the Caribbean as a reason to PRESERVE Cuba.

Cuba or not, if you go ANYWHERE near where a cruise ship docks, NOTHING is "native" or authentic. It's catered towards tourism and a fast buck, be it legal or scam.

Personally, I'd love to have the chance to get into Cuba, experience it before it falls back into the beachy dreamland of the 1050's that Americans use to flock to. I know it's rough. I know it's not polished. I know the cars are old. I know the culture is warm, I know spanish, I know the pig is cooked properly and in many different ways, that's enough for me. Viva la Cuba!

YES! Once a cruise ship establishes an itinerary, suddenly all the little port-of-call towns acquire an identical appearance, with all the same shops. It's really annoying. But Cuba can regulate that. At least, while Raul is still around... I hope it doesn't devolve into a huge political power struggle over the money to be made by allowing the Yanquis to invade with their hyper-commercialism. Could get ugly, and very corrupt.

I'm in agreement here; as relations with Cuba are normalized (and the sooner, the better) it will be as if a large space on the map which has been in limbo for over fifty years, suddenly returned to the living. But those who want to se the "time capsule" that Havana and other parts of Cuba became had better move quickly -- it ain't gonna last.

I could care less about cruise ships -- or bargain flights, for that matter. Let me know when I can get there legally by surface transportation, and find my own way around.

Cuba doesn't have a port of call. Only military docks. No place for cruise ships anytime soon. It's not about money for infrastructure, it's about control.
Google-earth Cuba. You will see the only island on earth without any marinas. Get too close to the water in Cuba and you get shot or imprisoned.
I too have visions of a fabulous Cuban vacation destination, but not until all the commies are dead and buried.
Now doesn't that sound like a great place to send American tax dollars.

South Fla will then have available and affordable housing or not? I think if it is free- many would leave- Cubans want their own country- Cuban-Americans - not so much but would own vacation property over there- me I'd make it NO SALES to investors before the Cuban people have first choice. Just like USDA home or HUD- and many people lost their birthright homes... let them have first chance or waive to sell-- keep the vultures back or on commercial property hotels etc

I think it would be perfect for a long weekend. Very anxious to see it and think it would be much more interesting than the Bahamas.

Put enough money in a politician's pocket and he'll fall in love with any policy...trust me...

It's a done deal....Plus Pope Francis will ex-communicate Marco Rubio if he makes this difficult...

God bless the pope..I kiss his ring..

I love him..The coolest, most with it, and world changing Pope since John Paul II....

Thumbs up, Pope Francis..WAY up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I missed this one. Yes, God had a very special purpose in mind when His servant, Jorge Mario Bergolio was elected Pope Francis. He didn't do all the things everyone in the Catholic Church wanted him to do (social issues.) He was chosen for a higher purpose, and freeing Cuba is a great gift to mankind. I never thought I would live to see it. I thought this stupidness would last 100 years.

Vive Cuba!!!!!!!!!
