Three young Muslims, including a newly-wed couple, were shot dead in their home in a North Carolina neighbourhood in the US.
Students Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19, were found shot dead at their apartment in Chapel Hill near the University of North Carolina (UNC) campus.
A 46-year-old man, identified by police as Craig Stephen Hicks, has been charged with three counts of first degree murder.
Insanely sad. It's the talk of the morning here at work that's for sure. We have a very large Muslim presence at our company, and chapel hill is pretty close. Sickening.
My town is in mourning and very hurt. First we lost of beloved Dean Smith and now this horrendous tragedy. Chapel Hill has long been a community of progressives and peace loving folks. We have three Asian daughters and moved back here from South Georgia to get away from small minds and prejudice.
It still is not clear if this is a hate crime or a neighborhood dispute. Whatever it is it has cast a spell of grief and dismay over our whole community.
These young people had recently given dental care to the homeless in Durham and were working on going to Syria to provide dental care to refugees. What a loss to our community as well as to humanity.
His wife was just interviewed...the people he killed were neighbors, and this was all over a parking dispute! A parking space is worth killing 3, ruining your own life and that of your family???
I don't think it was a hate crime. he is a self-avowed "grumpy old man" from his FB page. The interview with a blonde neighbor depicts him to be a very angry and belligerent individual.
If he was so brave and wanted Muslim blood, he should've went and fight against ISIS or something...
One frightening thing is that the young man he shot doesn't look "stereotypically" Muslim. He could pass as any dark-haired, fair-skinned American citizen. Heck, I look like that way too. Would I have also been a target for possessing his qualities? Maybe in North Carolina these dark-haired folks stand out...?
It wasn't a hate crime. He didn't discriminate against who he threatened to shoot for parking in his spot. He is a psycho.
