Its a decent paying job for someone with no other marketable skills, and odds are pretty good you will go home every night, so long as a you shoot first......
Amen, wpme. This pays extremely well given the limited prerequisites required to be considered. Especially when one adds in lucrative pensions and terrific insurance.

Death sentence? Do you mean that a miniature instant court is convened while they are running, and a sentence of death is passed?
If a suspect runs, it's reasonable to think they might have committed some sort of crime or have a warrant for their arrest. If the suspect turns and pulls a gun or attempts to use deadly force, then the officer may use deadly force to protect himself. It's not a "sentence", it's self-defense, just as you might do if someone tried to kill you.
What about Freddie and Eric Garner? Well on some occasions the cops screw up or in very rare circumstances knowingly murder someone ....... yeah, they're not all perfect, but on average they're a helluva lot better than criminals who kill a LOT of people.
Listen to the person in custody when asking for medical attention.
Don't use brutality if not necessary.
Don't shoot to kill if the threat is gone since the person you want is fleeing with their back towards you. That means to me, the threat no longer exists.
If one truly wants to make a difference as a public servant, it takes humanity, compassion and not allowing oneself to become callous, mentally burnt out. If one can't use self control and good judgment, maybe that thankless job is not for you (general you).

Yeah, sticking your knee on someone's head while they lay on the ground is "self defense". Not buying it.
Lately, police officers seem to make situations worse---such as tasering an elderly woman suffering from dementia. Great stuff there. I am impressed.
I guess the ones who choose inner city work are adrenaline junkies, and also have a dominant personality type.
In Chicago most new officers are assigned to violent districts before putting in time to move out to different districts.
I think its somewhat good, and somewhat bad.
The bad part being that the officers don't get to develop relationships with residents. It's kind of like a revolving door, similar to the school system.
Honestly, I think we need a complete overhaul of some communities. And not by pouring a ton of money into them, but by getting people who are gifted at helping, and understand the problems, to come in and help. If there's going to be money poured into the communities do it through businesses owned by the community, or help existing business owners expand. Something where the responsibility and ownership stays in the community.
I think a similar plan should be created for some rural distressed areas. Stop paying billions to build up other countries and start with our own.
Our leadership owns this problem as much if not more than any individual officer.
