The city has launched a probe of Whole Foods Markets after investigators nabbed the upscale food purveyor for routinely overcharging customers on groceries during dozens of inspections dating back to at least 2010, the Daily News has learned.
The most recent spate of violations came during a sting operation the Department of Consumer Affairs conducted in the fall that specifically checked the accuracy of the weight marked on pre-packaged products.
Inspectors weighed 80 different types of items at Whole Foods’ eight locations in the city that were open at the time. They found every label was inaccurate, with many overcharging consumers, agency spokeswoman Abby Lootens told The News.
If you think that's bad, check out the scales at HEB Central Market sometime. They also spew so much water on their produce that it vastly increases the weight of it. I shake that stuff off. They have self-service scales where you can put the produce in a bag, plop it on the scale, enter the PLU code, and it prints off a sticker with a bar code on it so the cashier can scan it instead of having to weigh every bag of produce.
Problem is, those scales are never accurate. I carried a 2 lb hand weight with me one time to check them just for giggles; every single one of them weighed that weight at 2.25-2.4 lbs.
The scales at the register are probably no better.

Hmm, I use those scales. Maybe I should check too for giggles (never really would have thought of it).
But I really hate that they spray produce with water all the time. It's okay for some things, but a lot of veggies keep better when they stay cool and DRY. I always figured spraying with water was a way to make things rot faster so you have to buy more.
I can see their argument that the prepackaged items they have no control over, however if that is the case, they should have warned said packaging company to watch their products the first time they were fined for the issue, and then dropped them as a supplier the next time. Regardless some of the price discrepancies that site listed would have me never shopping at that store again. $0.80 extra on something? Depends on how big the package was, could be a minor problem if its a big package that costs $7 or $8, to a big problem if its a smaller package that only costs $2 or $3 to start. $14.84 extra on something? Nope. GTFO, I'd never shop there again, that is straight up scammy no matter the size or original package cost.
Supermarkets in the there agreements with there Supplies, have a ChargeBack Clause, If one of there pre-packaged product get tagged as underweight by weights and measures, the fine cost is charged back to the supplier, the Supermarket does not eat that fine,
It will get stuck with fines for Overweight Scales, No W/M seals, Seal broken, or Overweight Items they package.
They just opened a whole paycheck near my house. That place IS quite expensive. There is a hamburger bar in the where burgers start at $12
But they do sell a brand of pimento cheese that I like. (made properly) And if you have an electric car they will charge it for free while you are there.
I was shocked at the prices in Seattle. $7 for a lb of butter? $7 for a loaf of bread? It's like people are just throwing their money in the trash. It's one thing to pay 50c-1 dollar more per item for convenience. But the prices are CRAZY. Like $3-4 more PER ITEM for the same stuff you can buy anywhere else. I never understood why people got so excited to shop there. The prices are outrageous.
You can shop there, but it's best to buy the store brand, and limit your purchases to X-number of dollars. Otherwise, you'll do much better elsewhere.
