For millions of Americans, robocalls are a barely tolerated nuisance. But when one Texas woman received 153 robocalls from a cable company, she didn't tolerate it, she complained – and was awarded almost a quarter of a million dollars.
US District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan has ordered Time Warner Cable to pay Araceli King of Irving, Texas, $229,500 for harassing her with more than 100 robocalls even after she complained about them, behavior the judge called "particularly egregious."
I have a bigger beef with the harassing phone calls we get from this company that wants us to switch from Con Ed to their company. Not only do they deceptively make it seem as if they are calling from Con Ed, but I've told them multiple times that I do not want to speak with them anymore. Yet, they continue to call, sometimes several times a day. We've come to the point where we try to screen their calls, but they sometimes call under an "anonymous" caller ID label or using different numbers. The company is "legit" in that they offer a valid service (I looked them up), but they are just pains in the butt. I hope they take heed of this notice, as I'd love a nice payday like this to pay off the mortgage!
I hope someone tries this with political robocalls. I get several per day during the season.
Junk mail too. I probably got 150 pieces of junk mail last month.
