Tell me about it. I was kicked out by my mother when I was 17, just before I graduated from high school. I then had to work my way through college on my own, as my mother continued to claim me as a dependent for however long that was allowed back then (early 70's).
In the meantime, I could not get financial aid as an independent student because my parents were claiming me as a dependent.
Yes, I could have turned them in for tax fraud - but then my FATHER would have gone to jail (not my mother).
Even if they HADN'T been claiming me as a dependent, I would have had to provide an affadavit signed by them that they were not providing support for me until I attained the age of 21, which in that state at that time was the age of full legal adulthood - which I couldn't get as I had been turned out of the house and my mother refused to have anything to do with me - and I couldn't get to my dad without going through her first.
If you weren't living with your parents or they weren't supporting you (as in paying for your college education) and yet they were claiming you as a dependent, they were committing tax fraud. You should have threatened to report them. If they still insisted on committing tax fraud, then it would be THEIR choice to commit fraud, and then pay the consequences for their actions.
Adults filing their own tax returns simply have to check "No" to the question "Can anyone else claim you as a dependent" when filing their tax return. Can you provide a source showing that adults under age 21 have to have an affidavit from their parents stating that they weren't providing support for you?

The early 70's were 40 years ago. I doubt anyone wants to go after their own parents for tax fraud lol
Just another politician pandering to the religious right. A pregnant teenager is a much better option. We all know that as long as you tell them not to have sex until they're married they will all follow through with it. LoL.
I actually don't see anywhere in the article that the man's daughters want or need birth control. It just sounds like he wants to control what options are available to his daughters via the insurance plan.
Why are some people assuming that his daughters are demanding that they receive birth control? The article does not say anything about what the daughters want.
I guess so but so what? They're adults. If they don't like daddy's insurance plan, they can get their own. There's no law that says people under age 26 HAVE to be on their parents' insurance plan. And there's no law saying parents HAVE TO provide insurance to their adult kids. They've got options.

That's true. And if daddy (Rep. Wieland in this case) doesn't want his daughters getting birth control through insurance he purchased, he can remove them from the policy - instead of clogging up the courts with a lawsuit.
By the way, it isn't his insurance plan. It is the group plan the state of Missouri offers to its employees. If it doesn't fit in with rep. Wieland's religious beliefs, he should feel free to buy another policy that does. And if he has a problem with his daughters using birth control, he should take it up with his daughters; rather than relying on the insurance plan or the courts to act as their parent.
What a creepy Dad. Denying bc from adult daughters is very controlling and just straight creepy behavior. They are just going to have to get it elsewhere. What a strange world we live in ...the 21st century is backward in some ways it seems. I find it strange that so many lawmakers are worried about our uterus and birth control choices. It is really disturbing. Are men really that mad we aren't pregnant and barefoot all the time?

If my parents were cheating me out of my own tax deductions while I was living independently, I'd tell them to either stop it or I'd do something to make them stop it.
And that probably wouldn't have been any more pleasant a conversation in the early 1970s than it would be today.

The women in question are adults. They have the option that other adults have, which is to purchase their own insurance plan that fits their own needs.
