If it takes a village to raise a child, community developments like Hope Meadows just might have the answer. The community of Hope Meadows in Rantoul, IL developed 21 years ago to provide subsidized rent to the elderly who in turn volunteer at least 6 hours a week helping parents living in the community raise their children who were adopted out of the foster care system.
How wonderful that Ms. Gossett adopted all four children so they would not have to be split up. The kids seem to be bright, well adjusted and enjoying the company of the seniors who volunteer with them. Truly an inspirational story. Thanks for sharing this with us, wisewino.
That's pretty cool, as long as everyone who lives there is carefully vetted.
So many people move away from their parents, or their parents move away from the hometown post-retirement, that this helps replace the extended families people had in generations past.
Thought is was a positive story and actually a project that both liberals and conservatives could embrace. Instead of looking at our aging population (that includes me) as a burden on the next generations, lets treat them as a resource. We have problems with a growing underclass who (using the terminology of the right) have become dependent upon government and lack the necessary skills to succeed, so place them in communities with willing seniors who can help point the way out of poverty, acting as tutors, child caregivers, and general role models in exchange for reduced rents. These type of developments could be built across the country with government/private funds. Who knows, maybe we an all find some common ground in such efforts.
This is one way to address above issue ... feels so good...except it isn't the villages responsibility... it is the responsibility of the parent ...
I would prefer to address the issue long before it becomes one
How about offering cash incentives for breeder women and irresponsible males so we can change the world permanently.. and prevent the misery that a child at risk experiences
