As part of his "America" exhibit at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan replaced the toilet in the museum's fourth-floor restroom with a fully functional replica cast in 18-karat gold.
Two days after opening the exhibit "America," it was reported there was some flooding on the fourth floor. An investigation led to the men's restroom where the water had been originating from. Some time during the opening hours thieves had removed the water pipes connecting water to the toilet and the toilet's seat from the exhibit. The parts weighed just over 3lbs, and had an approximate value of around forty thousand dollars.
A museum engineer stated; "They should just replace that stuff with parts from Home Depot. I had to fix mine at home, and it cost me twunty dollahs."
