The number of domestic violence reports committed by NFL players when controlled for age is 55.4% less that the general public.
FiveThirtyEight's Benjamin Morris tallied up the incidents in USA Today's NFL Arrests Database to discern crime rates among NFL players. He then compared those numbers to the national averages among 25-29 year olds, and found the rate of domestic violence in the NFL to be 55.4% that of the general population. And the overall crime rate was a mere 13% of the national average.

Meanwhile:
"Two studies have found that at least 40 percent of police officer families experience domestic violence, in contrast to 10 percent of families in the general population. A third study of older and more experienced officers found a rate of 24 percent, indicating that domestic violence is two to four times more common among police families than American families in general."
Police Have a Much Bigger Domestic-Abuse Problem Than the NFL Does - The Atlantic

The object of this thread isn't to further vilify the police but to again point out that there are serious mental issues affecting police officers that are not be addressed, by the police departments that they serve which I believe result in dire consequences for the public at large and the families of these officers. Until we recognize that fact, we will continue to have recurrent problems arising from excessive use of force by the police.

I just watched Real Sports with Bryant Grumble, and they had a feature about the domestic abuse prevalent in MMA. They showed a graphic of the normal population (350 incidents per 100,000 men), the NFL (around 200 incidents per 100,000) and the MMA (750 per 100,000 men). Steroid use is prevalent in the MMA, plus the sport attracts very aggressive and violent people. Not all of them of course, but enough that it's a problem. The UFC doesn't care if they have criminal records of domestic violence before they enter the cage.

I for one don’t take things at face value. I know it tough to exercise critical thinking.

I’m willing to bet that it’s a lot easier as a well-paid NFL player to grease a women’s palm after she gets slapped around at little bit. Some of these women know to keep silent because of the gravy train.
