Football players should unionize. Their universities are profiting off them, treating them like employees, and they have no regular protections. Tuition is not enough. The athletes don't even get anything beyond board.

If I were the president of a university, I'd only offer scholarships and roster spots for non-union athletes.
Most of those schools lose money on football, they just don't like it to be known. I had to do a college report on college football a few years ago. The schools are paying $$$$$$$$$$ to function as NFL and NBA minor leagues.
In football, the expenses associated with going to a bowl game are insane. In short, the schools think they need big time programs to recruit at all (even non-athletes), and they are afraid to ditch them. Who wants to chance losing their career over a decision like that?
When you really dig, it is hard to prove college football is anything other than a total financial loss for the national system.

Gee, and I thought they were there to get a degree. Too bad they schools don't place as much emphasis on education as they do on sports. It's sad to see that in the majority of states the highest paid public employee is a college sports coach. Sad.
