Been waiting for a story like this..

Teenager Prosecuted for Possessing Own Nude Selfie | Rolling Stone

Personally, I would have loved seeing this go to court, but totally understand why the kid took the deal. Hopefully, they included some clause for expungement if he completes the 1 year of probation. I don't know that a prosecution of it would stand up. At least being charged as an adult.

This is more just to highlight the insanity of our legal system, in some places. He would be prosecuted as an adult, for taking a nude selfie of himself at age 16, which is over the age of consent in NC.

Now.. The AOC really doesn't matter. That's pretty irrelevant. But if you're going to charge someone as an adult..

Legally, it's probably all buttoned up.. After all, the law says "Under 18" for the images.. But, can you possess porn of yourself? Assuming yes.. I can't see that you should be prosecuted for it.

The worse part of this whole thing is what his GF got. No jail time. 250 dollar fine. Has to take a class on making better life choices. And is banned from a cell phone for a year.

Yep, real fair.

It looks like she is 16 and he is 17. She probably took the picts "younger than 16."

Ridiculous story all around. Sounds like he is also being charged for something unrelated that they aren't disclosing.

It is a Rolling Stone story, so I am going to assume a lot that was reported was not true, and a lot of relevant information was left out.

Amen.

There's also a good chance the entire thing is a lie, but time will tell.

That would definitely add a wrinkle due to sex laws that personally I don't entirely agree with but it is what it is. Also if the party wasn't a minor according to the law, that wouldn't make it child porn but instead any photo sent to him by the girlfriend would be.

^^^This. The overall quality of the media in the US is at a record low IMO. Report first, report fast....push agendas....no time for proper fact checking....

Well, Rolling Stone should be suspect after that phony UVA rape story they published. Fortunately, the Internet makes it easy to fact check the story.

N.C. just prosecuted a teenage couple for making child porn

NC Law: Teens who take nude selfie photos face adult sex charges - Fayetteville Observer: Local News

I didn't bother to link any of the other sources.

Frankly, I don't know how much more of this the country is willing to take. The justice system seems to be completely broken.
