Anti-gay marriage Oregon bakery defies state order to pay damages to couple | US news | The Guardian

Quote:
The owners of a Portland-area bakery are refusing to pay $135,000 in state-ordered damages to a same-sex couple who were denied service, despite a crowdfunding effort on their behalf having raised more than $500,000.

Very old and demonstrative story about struggle with LGBT community.

I am sure that firstly when the Kleins started to collect money they were willing to pay the dept.
And now when Kim Davis's story has so much attention and even the pope Francis comes to support her in her fight, they decided to continue this endless war.

Or it is just a simple greed?

Not much controversy here, refusing to pay a court ordered judgement is that much of problem at least for the parties who prevailed. Garnishments, property seizures, sheriff's sales, work wonders with recalcitrant defendants.

They should sell everything off and move to Mexico before their assets are seized.

They can always file bankruptcy and discharge the judgment.

It is highly unlikely they even qualify for bankruptcy.

They've received more than $500,000 in crowdfunding support since they decided they deserve a special exemption from following the law. Even where one qualifies for bankruptcy, it isn't a magic wand which makes debts go away - the bankruptcy court first orders a dischargee's assets, aside from a certain limited amount set aside to allow one to live, to pay off obligations.

The $135k damages award would only go away if the $500k is gone (and if the bakers have reasonable explanation for why it is gone), and if the business assets cannot cover it.

So, sorry, here in the real world it is very unlikely they have the option of filing for bankruptcy.

I thought that the $135K was a fine from the State for the bakery discriminating against a protected (in the state of Oregon) class......

I'm sure they are going to burn through a bunch of that money in legal fee's for their appeal.

They could always just take the money and make a run for it, head off to some wonderful locales such as Kuwait, Laos or Rwanda where the government could not touch them.

Could go to Russia,, open a bakery and market how anti-homosexual they are and it might even earn them business.
