Of course it would have been way better if the robber had chosen not to rob anyone and instead just put effort into making something of himself, but since he decided to victimize other people for his own gain, this was his own doing. You can't fault someone for defending themselves in such a situation. They don't know your sad, sad tale of never having a stable home, being abused, having undiagnosed mental illnesses, or being of below average intelligence... they just know you're currently holding them up and if you're capable of that, you're probably capable of killing them, too.
a good example why it's good for the civilian population to be armed.
