Why should they commit to provide any support? They weren't slave owners. They don't know anyone who was a slave. Oh wait. Because they have something that someone else doesn't so the other person is entitled to having the same. I forgot.
There are certainly effects and repercussions that persist far beyond the lifespans of the people who were involved. Think about the Native Americans in the United States. They are still greatly suffering for what was done to them 150 years ago.

What we did to the Native Americans was a near total genocide. That's a false equivalence

We? Gee, if you did something terrible to Native Americans, shame on you. I haven't done a thing to them. I did donate a lot of money to them at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, though.

Right, like what the Iroquois did to the Huron. Without the "near" part. When will the former be putting the reparations checks in the mail? There must be someone with 1/128th Huron ancestry around to cash in.
How about simply acknowledging the legacy of the past and committing to provide some support going forward?
AND WHEN DOES THIS end???
im Christian
I demand all ancestors of the roman empire compensate me in some way
Im irish...pay up Britain
Im also French so my own country owes me for what my ancestors did during the revolution
this is such a ridiculous and downright ignorant idea it makes me laugh
Ive never been a slave
ive never owned a slave
we ALL benefit somehow from someone's past atrocities...so knock it off free loaders
I do believe that man should acknowledge that man has a terrible record of treating others horribly. Slavery is an even institution that has plagued, and continues to today, the world for thousands of years. Can't we just issue a blanket, "Throughout history people have done and continue doing extremely bad things to other people and it sucks." and leave it at that?
ok...I acknowledge it
my species has done some horrible stuff to each other
does that make you feel better now??
Well, if you want to go there, the 14th Amendment
outlawed all slavery except for those who are
incarcerated.
So look to the prison system for your "living slave".
