A one-kilometer-high skyscraper, erected by Third World slaves (excuse me, "guest workers") for one of the most repressive regimes in the world? What could possibly go wrong?
Maybe they could get a Pharaoh to run the show and some Hebrews to do the work
My first thought is: Is it even safe to build something that tall? What do you do in case of a fire? Mass shooter (I am American)? Granted, I'm no engineer, but I would not feel safe in that building.
Second thought: What a perfect display of insecurity. A country that is not in the top 999,000 list of tourist destinations has to have the tallest building in the world, because they have nothing else to boast?

Here's a question along the lines of security: in the event someone were to fly a jet into this 1km tall skyscraper, which ethnicity/religion would get the greatest response?
1) American - Christian
2) Israeli - Jewish
3) Arab - Muslim
4) Other

I watched an engineering program several years ago where some architects & engineers were studying the possibility of designing & building a mile high skyscraper. Their opinion was it was entirely possible, but there were many problems yet to be solved. Among them were the increased risk of aircraft collision, and weather (mostly wind conditions), and fire suppression. Another problem was sheer volume of space required for multiple elevator systems to move people to those heights.
We might have the ability to build a building that tall, but it doesn't mean we should.
In anticipation of the eventual depletion of their oil reserve (and prevalence of alternative fuel sources), Saudi Arabia has been building up tourist attractions in Dubai and elsewhere to transition to an international tourist destination (don't ask). Kinda like how they tried to make Vegas into a family destination.
So, this is probably consistent with that strategy. Hey, no one said they can't house gazillion Syrian refugees in this tower!! lol

Doha is in Qater, not Saudi Arabia. Also if you are thinking about Burj Khalifa that's in Dubai, UAE.

Maybe some crazy Hindu would fly in to it screaming: "Vishnu is great!"
