Oh, we from Hawaii remember. My Grandmother almost miscarried my Father and one of my Aunt's last memories of sight (she went blind not long after) was of Japanese planes flying over her head.
My maternal Grandfather was a Soldier at Wheeler AAF and my maternal step-Grandfather was a civilian worker at Pearl Harbor and had nightmares for the rest of his life.
My family survived through Pearl Harbor while living on Oahu as well. I learned many things while my grandfather was still alive, but it's sad that he passed before I became an adult and had better ears to listen.
My grandmother went into premature labor with my mother on 12/7/41 and they were able to stabilize her and my mum was born EXACTLY two months later on Maui.
I always remember this day as a "Day that will live in infamy." A solemn day.
And I saw the actual speech written in his own handwriting. It's in a museum at his home in Hyde Park, NY.
