A word to the wise: Stay away from ghost peppers.

A puree made from these peppers — which are infamous for their off-the-charts level of spiciness — led to a rare, life-threatening condition in an otherwise healthy, 47-year-old man in California, according to a recent report of the man's case.

Ghost peppers are among the hottest chili peppers in the world, the report said. They have a measured "heat" of more than 1 million Scoville heat units, according to the report. (For comparison, a poblano pepper measures at 2,000 Scoville units, and jalapeños come in at 5,000. Eating a single seed from a ghost pepper can cause severe burning in the mouth that lasts up to 30 minutes, the report said.

Anyone down for a Ghost Pepper eating contest?

Very hot as in spicy doesn't mean it's hot like a hot like temperature hot. So if you hold this pepper, do you burn yourself....2nd degree burns?

This pepper is extreme. I bought a hot sauce made from it. One or two drops had a powerful effect. Not just spicy but you could feel a jolt of sorts from it. Delicious when used safely.

I was going to buy a bottle of ghost pepper sauce for a friend who loves hot sauce. He'd never heard of ghost peppers. But I knew the macho-man wouldn't heed my warning about it. I envisioned him scooping up a teaspoon of the stuff with a cracker... and then stop breathing moments later.

He didn't get the ghost pepper sauce. I didn't want to feel responsible for killing him.

BTW.... I read once that people rub ghost peppers on fences in Africa to prevent the elephants from knocking them down. The ghost peppers actually burn the elephants hide. The elephants detect the scent and avoid the GP.

I never heard of ghost peppers but I do not knowingly eat anything hotter than pepperoncini.
