I remember a similar incident when I was in the USAF. I lived in the old bachelor officers' quarters with a roommate, basically a studio apartment on base,. One night after I went to sleep, my roommate came home and went to bed without locking our door. When I awoke in the middle of the night I saw the outline of a man (I'm female) standing over my bed. I FREAKED and jumped about 10 feet across the room to the light switch, only to realize it was a friend, blacked out drunk, who thought he was in his girlfriend's room. I can only imagine what could have happened if I hadn't woken at that moment.
There's no reason to leave a door unlocked. It just doesn't make sense. To say it's a safe neighborhood, or a secure building, so what? Who are you leaving it unlocked for? It seems like you are just giving unnecessary temptation to others, and poor security to yourself, your family, and your possessions. Personally, I filed a security report with the SP's and my roommate got in trouble for leaving the door unlocked. It served her right for jeopardizing my safety through her carelessness.
