I was in a sorority in college; we never had an eating contest; and generally didn't do stupid things.

Taking a practical tack, no one at that sorority knew anything about doing a Heimlich maneuver? How to handle choking and how to handle someone who is way over drunk ought to be taught during the first week or so of college, IMHO. Lord knows, many of the kids will see one or both a time or two.

I saw an interview with one of the EMTs on the news...he said they couldn't even get their fingers in her mouth because it was literally packed to the teeth with pancake. So the Heimlich maneuver would have been useless in this situation, unfortunately.

From reading it says she only consumed 3 or 4 pancakes before falling down, and when she transferred to the hospital she was in critical but stable condition. So what caused her death? It could have been almost anything. She could have possibly had a stroke.
The contest might not be what caused her death.

Yes, I saw that, too. Ughhhhhhhhh.

I don't think people die 3 or 4 days after choking. Cut off the air supply and you're dead in minutes, not days.

Wrong. You can be brain dead from lack of oxygen and still be kept alive on a respirator.

Her father, James Nelson, was a Port Authority police officer who died at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.
Am I supposed to feel more sorry for her based on that fact? I don't. Her father was a hero, yes, but it shouldn't have any bearing here.

I seriously thought that only frat guys did stuff as stupid as eating contests. What a terribly senseless way to die - I feel sorry for her family - there's just no way to reconcile this.

This girl was someone's daughter. Her mother carried her for nine months, and she had people who cared deeply for her. Show a little respect.

And regarding the stupidity of her choices -- I'll wager every one of you made stupid choices at that age -- and many of you are still doing so. Shame on you.
