So that means when a kid has a long fall and dies - which is almost always - the angels collectively said "Let him die, we got better things to do right now!" ... ?

It's inescapable - if you're going to credit heavenly agents with the rare time something like this doesn't turn out bad, you also have to acknowledge that the far more common eventuality of a tragic result means that the same heavenly agents could have intervened but deliberately chose to let the falling child die.

The angel is kind of incompetent too. A good angel would have prevented him from falling out, in the first place. But it must be true, because the tree couldn't have had anything to do with it.

You assume angels don't take bets.

That's pretty much what people mean when they say things like, "God decided to take [child] back", or "God had another plan for him/her".
