I would like the punishment to fit the crime. Lock them up in a hot car and see how they like it.
I see no excuse for this. None. Kids or pets.
I actually get anxious in parking lots on hot days, wondering if I am going to see a child or pet locked in a hot car.
It is now not illegal to bust in a window and rescue pets in my state. Just passed last year.
True. I think very few mothers of small children are more "career focused" than "kid focused". The so-called career is far more often a means to pay the bills and live somewhere safe with good schools.
I agree totally and repped this post.
More to the point and to respond to OP title, Kids Left In Cars, It's Starting Again, I don't think the problem ever went away. It's a seasonal issue, with summer months obviously being more lethal and hence more in the papers.
An observation. Growing up in the 60-70, in my world few women worked, most that did were not mothers or were divorced. Taking your child to a daycare facility was rare. Most women did not enter the workforce until their children were in kindergarten or first grade because kindergarten was half days. And most worked only part time.
Call our busy lifestyles today an excuse but it is our reality.
I agree we as a society spend too much time engrossed in our devices and IMO its a problem we need to work on. Our busy lives and work requirements are none the less an issue that can lead to this very type of tragedy.
Well I grew up outside NYC in the 70s and moms were most certainly entering or in the workforce. You're in the south, so it was most likely different.
I don't recall hear of kids being left in hot cars in NY in the 70s or 80s on a regular basis.
What is it with "busy" lifestyles today? Can you explain?
People pay bills online, shop online, ect. People used to have sit down and go through the bills, write out checks, mail the checks. So explain how people had more time, they didn't.
If anything people should have more time today. Because tasks that used to take hours, now take minutes.
Many people make themselves "busy" today, or have to appear "busy" as they equate that with being more important.
Too many today just can't focus on the task at hand.
Unless someone is working 3 jobs to stay afloat, or dealing with a special needs child, caregiver to sick or elderly family member, many today because they prioritize make themselves "busy".
not for nothing, my dad used to leave me in the car, while the girls went Department Store shopping. The car had roll up windows, all I had to do was open the windows. I dont know If my dad was hanging around close by or not, but it was a common practice in the 70's. I would even sit on the roof of the car, and see other kids doing the same.
But we , society, know better know. everyone knows. Why cant parents just load up the gang, and go shopping together? why cant parents just plan better, and find away to work around each others shift? Not all parents that do this are evil, with the intention to harm, but more desperate and lost, when they leave kids for a very long time. taking risks because of the stupidest reasons. Pure neglect.

Simply put, kids weren't in cars as much in the days of the stay at home mom.Now people juggle a lot more.
