When Christine Braswell found a man breaking into her SUV in a Walmart parking lot in North Carolina, she chased him. When the 26-year-old couldn't catch him, she jumped behind the wheel -- and what happened next is scary and disturbing to watch.
"She slammed on her brakes, crammed it in reverse, and ran over the median there in between and hit him in the back. I mean she, just he was running and she just flat hit him," said witness Janice Kelley.
I'm not clear on if he was running with her purse or had dropped it after being confonted. The article says she backed up in reverse to hit him but the video shows her in forward drive. If he had the stolen property, I can't blame her for running him down. Reason being a purse usually contains not only cash but sensitive info, info that no one would want in the hands of someone like that. Especially a pregnant woman. I'm sure this ran through her mind. Plus the angry feeling of being violated was present no doubt.
If he just dropped it and ran off following him while calling the police would have sufficed. I feel no sympathy for him though. After he heals from his injuries I want to think he will change his ways, but in most cases you're dealing with repeat offenders. And the acts usually increase in violence as well. Here in my city we have regular stories where a violent crime took place and when caught the person had 25 or 30 priors.
Although I understand that she wouldn't want her purse with identification & credit cards to be stolen, running over someone with a car is a bit of an overreaction. So I am not surprised to hear that she has had legal charges filed against her.
While I believe the woman should not have attempted vehicular homicide, I have no sympathy for the thief. When you choose to rob someone, you are taking your life in your hands.
Hitting someone over money is one thing.
But the next step could have (and probably would have) been large scale identity theft.
That can be life changing and life crippling. I've seen people trying to clean up after that crap for YEARS.
Good for her. I hope he gets some serious jail time for his crimes.
The problem here is that she wanted to play vigilante.
And while that may work on movies or on the tv, it's not without consequences in real life.
She's ignorantly placed her own freedom in jeopardy to make herself feel vindicated.
