Missing hikers found dead in the desert

This is an older couple they found out at Amboy Crater. not to be confused with the 21 & 20 yr olds from Westminster.

Amboy crater is 70 miles Northeast from the Maze Loop trail of Joshua Tree National Park, where the 21/20 yo were last known to be.

Hope they are prepared for all the traffic that will be out there on August 21.

I bet the local authorities and S&R folks are dreading it!

Why would there be traffic there on August 21? The eclipse? The eclipse totality will be much farther north. It won't touch anywhere in California.

The eclipse won't be total here in Southern CA but it will still be cool to witness a partial. I think around 65%.

Florida has one as well. As historical trivia, the Florida and California ones are named after tasty citrus trees. My guess is that the New York one was named after the Dutch (early and brief colonial power in the area) orange is the color of their royal family.

I wanted to look this up. According to Wikipedia for Orange County, NY,
Quote:
Orange County was officially established on November 1, 1683, when the Province of New York was divided into twelve counties. Each of these was named to honor a member of the British royal family, and Orange County took its name from the Prince of Orange, who subsequently became King William III of England.

The desert is a harsh teacher. Un guided outings of any length should not be taken by novices. The dangers are very real and very numerous. We never take to the wild places on even just overnight outings without very careful preparation. Water (#1) food, medical supplies, emergency shelter, weapons you name it. And a time table. If we don't show back up a d are 24 hours overdue someone knows where were at if as is often the case no electronic communication is possible.

Learning the hard way , as we see here, can be fatal.

The odd thing about this case is that they were on an easy hike/walk, and did make contact with a rescue crew, which responded instantly, but somehow they both died before the crew arrived. That's scary. It shows you what the heat can do, and the extent to which people underestimate its danger. Plus, one of the visitors had a chronic heart condition. It was a very bad decision to take that hike in that kind of weather.
