There are too many cases in which CPS authorities didn't act soon enough, or at all. Or followed directives to keep a family together in spite of repeated abuse reports.

Years ago we reported a neighbor to CPS. She would run around the yard and kick her toddlers in the knees or hit them with a hanger if they did nto obey her quickly enough. They did not come. We called and called. Finally we talked to a supervisor and she said they do not send people into that area because they feel it is too dangerous. (The area was poor and 905 Hispanic, but not particularly dangerous - although this particular woman was a heroine user and seller and prostitute - she eventually got arrested because some neighbor helped set up a bust of one of her heroine deals).

Meanwhile a friend of my wife who is an exemplary parent, was in the grocery store with her 4 year old. The child threw a jar of jelly from the shelf onto the floor and broke it. Mom told her to stop. She did it again and mom said stop or you will get a spanking. She did it again and mom swatted her bottom. Someone from the store followed mom home and called CPS. CPS came with a warrant. took the kids, searched the house, pulled everything out of the fridge and left it on the floor, pulled cushions out of the couch, just left the house in shambles. They found nothing. They questioned the kids for hours trying to gt them to say their parents hit them a lot. Failed and returned the kids at 11 p.m. (on a weeknight and two of the older kids were in school). Did not say a word. No apology, no you are cleared, nothing. Just left and dropped of the kids shortly after.

Those two contacts left me with a low opinion of the local CPS. Hopefully they are better elsewhere.

It seems there must be more to the story. I volunteer with kids in foster care, and have done parent coaching with parents whose kids are at risk for being removed from the home, and I've never seen anything remotely like that. When the parents tell you the story of why they are at risk for being "in the system", their version is usually quite far afield from reality.

This requires too many people to act crazy: the other parent in the grocery store who witnessed this situation to so completely blow it out of proportion, the cops who did the search and destroyed the order of the house, CPS workers who completely blew out of proportion their response to this one complaint. I'm sorry, one bad apple is one thing. For ALL these people to react so severely over a small incident makes it seem not really true. When you have a story where many people, from different agencies act like this, as well as an unrelated witness from the general public, um.

HUM, let my take a wild guess......the loving parent did it?????

Biggest danger to a kid is the parents, or a person close to the kid, who is trusted by those parents.

That's right. Those are the people who have access.

I agree with much of all you said. BF has been working with DSS for many years, and you won't find a more kind hearted, caring person who truly cares about the children, and elderly, that he works to protect. Yes, there are some bad apples, as with any thing.

There is no way a CPS worker would be able to do what was described as a raid. It has to be the police, with a warrant, from a judge to be able to go in a house and do that. Unless you were there and know first hand what took place, most likely, the conflicting story comes from a parent that knows they are in trouble and try to make up some cockamamie story! The only way CPS can go in to a house is either by being invited, or being with a police officer with a warrant to enter. Why would CPS even look in cushions?? It has nothing to do with the incident. Maybe there were other reasons they got a warrant and did such a search and your wife's friend is not fessing up to other problems. I don't believe the story as it's been told.

Not going out to a specific area, that you know of...do you watch their house 24/7? A CPS worker not going out to an area because it's not a good area? If a worker feels any threat, they call the local police as an escort. A CPS worker could lose their job for not responding to a complaint as is, but also, if something happens to a child, they would absolutely lose their job, could be sued, and could end up in jail. If you don't see a response, since you cared so much to call CPS about the kids in the first place, you call the state DSS office, a local politician, or someone to complain about that CPS worker/supervisor. Trust me, someone would have gone out there, no matter where it was. It doesn't matter the economic background.

Curious to know, after your call to CPS, and the time she got arrested, did you continue to see her swat the kids? Did you ever call the police to report this? Did you ever video this abuse to present, since you could see it happening??

Its sad but, it's economic. The state doesn't want any additional burden raising someone's kids. It's that simple. Tell a certain sector in society no worries, we got it covered and you will see unwanted pregnancies go through the roof.

It's sad but, the DHS groups are playing numbers. The schills that have to do the work are underpaid and probably see too much. Low motivation to do much else. Especially when the other half of the work force doesn't care. It's just a pay check and measly one at that.

Budgets. They are what they are. We all want lower taxes well, here's a tribute to that thinking. Truth is quite a few should never have kids. This case is beyond sad. It shakes you to your core. And yet, things like this happen routinely. Kids in microwave ovens, etc.....it just doesn't seem to end. Not sure how low one's life has to get to drive someone to this but, it does and continues to happen.

So many kids fall through the cracks. I know many CPS workers and they do the best they can. Their job eats them up inside when things go wrong or there's nothing more they can do. I just think it's impossible to keep up, there's so many. Terribly sad
