I just found out someone I know traveled to St. Marten on Sunday. They just wanted to spend some time at their vacation home....
No joke, they flew into a hurricane. It infuriates me that the island may actually have to spend time or money rescuing or helping someone who voluntarily put themselves in harm's way. Grrrr....

Did they also book their ticket and plan the trip on Sunday? It's not like a hurricane is something you know about weeks in advance.
They say 90% destruction of Barbuda (population around 1,500) and 95% destruction of St. Maartin. Not sure how Puerto Rico is faring or quite which direction it's taking after that. I've heard from friends in middle/lower Florida who say the roads out are a parking lot.
If this graphic is accurate, it looks like Puerto Rico missed out almost completely on the hurricane force winds, which is good! I'm sure there's still plenty of damage but not near as bad as it could have been. Dominican Republic and Haiti may miss the hurricane force winds as well.

No, they booked their tickets a few days before--but after it was well known that there was a huge hurricane forming in the Atlantic, heading for the leeward islands. They could have rebooked.
They weren't going to St. Martin for work or anything like that. The vacation house is one they own, not a rental that they would lose out on if they didn't travel right now. They just got on a plane on a whim.
