Where was her husband during all of this? Between both parents, neither one was responsible for their child?

I don't, either. I never assumed that my child was OK.

When they got home, the mother didn't realize her son was missing and ended up falling asleep while watching a movie, Monson said. She later went to bed, still without realizing that the boy wasn't home, according to police.

His mother called police at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday after noticing that her son was missing.
So much for love for your child

A toddler to boot, a little person who needs 24 hr supervision

Time to adopt this kid out

Good question. Why is all the focus on the mom? Are the parents separated or divorced?

"The child and his family live in a home with other families". What does that mean? A group home of some sort? Is there a father in the picture at all? Doesn't sound like there is on a regular basis.

Another reason why a man should only have one wife.

They are Mormon fundamentalist polygamists of some kind (probably not FLDS, as visiting a corn maze, not to mention watching a movie later, would be considered way too worldly for that bunch), and the "sister" accompanying this little boy's mother was a sister-wife. Dad, who has been identified only as "Robert", was not present - visiting another wife, possibly? Or just elsewhere...

Evidently there are at least two wives sharing the same household, or possibly a duplex-like situation with each wife and her kids having separate quarters under one roof. There were several little blond four year old boys running around, according to the father - not that this is an excuse of any kind. It appears the child's mother assumed he was spending the night with his "other-mother" and half-siblings.

Still doesn't explain why no one bothered to count noses before departing the corn maze. Too many kids, too little individualization, too few adults - and none of the adults is receiving any kind of reprimand or counseling or anything else for having "lost" this little boy, evidently. I hope the child was not punished - some fundamentalists can be very harsh on childish misdemeanors and corporal punishment is often the rule.

Glad it turned out favorably, but polygamy is not healthy for children and other living things (particularly women).

Wasn't it determined early in this thread--like days ago--that it was an extended polygamist family? Your statement doesn't really make much sense in that sort of a setup, as if it were just two parents and one set of kids.

ETA: Just saw CraigCreek's post.

Uh....isn't that illegal? Sounds like the family has bigger problems than a lost kid. Are authorities going to apply the anti-polygamy law? Child neglect due to polygamy?

WTH?! Why wasn't that information included in the article? And how could a small child possibly be at fault for adult failure to supervise him? So, in some sectors of the LDS world, up is down, black is white, and children are responsible for their own neglect?

Not LDS - fundamentalist Mormons, aka polygamists, who claim to adhere to the original teachings of Joseph Smith, which were abandoned by the LDS church around 1890 (so Utah could achieve statehood rather than remain a territory).

Polygamy is illegal but largely overlooked in much of Utah and elsewhere. Technically, the polygamist men are not bigamists, as only the first wife is married legally - the rest are "spiritual wives" and while they may have a marriage ceremony (usually very brief and with little fore-planning), they are not legally married. So additional "wives" can claim to be single mothers eventually, and qualify for all sorts of government benefits - i.d. "bleeding the beast".

There's a lot of info. online - check out Short Creek and the FLDS for starters, and don't overlook the Kingston clan, who wear modern clothing and fit right in - but who have a nasty habit of marrying not only plurally, but also marrying their uncles, half-siblings, and worse. They all look alike by now -the Kingston mouth is an instant give-away.

As for why the child might be punished, if he's FLDS, he would be expected to "keep sweet" and to instantly obey his parents in all things. Wandering off would be interpreted as being disobedient and worthy of punishment. The FLDS do not stint when it comes to corporal punishment for the children, well into their teens...so I really, really hope this family was not FLDS but polygamists of some other stripe, which seems likely from the clues previously mentioned.

There are also many independent fundamentalist polygamists, groups in Mexico and Canada, Idaho and more recently Oklahoma. The UAP has been reinterpreted, and many families are leaving Short Creek, aka Colorado City/ Hildale, rather than pay a measly $100 monthly rent for property in which they've lived, because of their "religious" (cult, rather) convictions. They refuse to see Warren Jeffs as anything but a prophet and God's spokesman, refuse to hear any evidence of his pedophilia and sexual abuse of kids (both boys and girls), and are very, very fearful and rigid in their believes, which are reinforced by living in a community of like-minded individuals.

Warning - once you start learning more about fundamentalist Mormons and polygamy, it's a rabbit hole. There are some good books out there - try "Under the Banner of Heaven", by Jeff Krakauer, for starters. It was written prior to the Yearning for Zion raids and subsequent arrest and conviction of Warren Jeffs, the disgraced FLDS "prophet", but the seeds of that time are made very clear.

There's quite a bit on YouTube as well - just search for FLDS, though you'll also get some smarmy, sickly-sweet FLDS videos with little kids singing about how their Daddy is the best man in the world, FLDS produced instructional videos about how to create those amazing hairstyles (and produce "the perfect oval" face), and a very weird polygamist stage version of "The Sound of Music".

No kidding - who knew Maria was not just a Sister in a previous life, but became a sister-wife upon marrying the captain??

The neglected kid has two biological parents; they are both responsible for him.
