Police: 3-Year-Old Left at Utah Corn Maze; Mom Realized the Next Day | WNEP.com

Sgt. Joe Monson told the New York Daily News that the boy and his mother went to the maze with a big group of people and somehow became separated. When they got home, the mother didn't realize her son was missing and ended up falling asleep while watching a movie, Monson said. She later went to bed, still without realizing that the boy wasn't home, according to police.

His mother called police at about 7:45 a.m. Tuesday after noticing that her son was missing.

I think there were details left out of that article that might make this make more sense.

In this article below, the child has been reunited with the mother and no charges have been filed so far.

Sounds to me, like she went with a big group of people (other families, friends) and she became separated and then went home, expecting the others she was with apparently to still have her child and to bring him home.

Some families operate like that. Everyone participates in taking care of the kids, and it's less structured than other families who clearly divide up supervisory duties.

There was a girl in Galveston, Danarriah Finley, 3 years old, who went missing from her home and it took investigators an entire day to clear everyone who legitimately might have taken her from the home for an outing. Because that's how they operated. Sounds like this family in the corn maze might be the same.

It does seem lax, though. Shouldn't the mom at some point have verified that her preschooler was in good hands?

At least she wasn't left inside a hot car.

Parents should know where young children are and who they are with at all times. This woman is a grade A moron. Didn't realize he was missing and fell asleep? She might have been drinking, or zonked out on drugs. Unbelievable.

Don't parents usually put a 3-year old to bed? There was never a point at which her mind said, "Oops, it's time to put little Timmy to bed"?

Drunk or drugged, take your pick.

I have a big family and this happens all the time. Parent tells a relative to watch their kid. Relative gets dostracted by something else. Kid wanders away. Parent comes back and asks: "Where's Johnny?" Relative: "Oh, $h!t!"

I've seen that with older kids but not a child so young to go overnight before they realize.

How many watch a movie, then go to bed without realizing their young child is missing?

Yes but usually that's instantaneous. I have a big family and no one ever waited 12 hours before realizing someone was missing. We go to the movies and maybe, maybe once we get to mcdonalds we realize someone is missing but we definitely don't get home and watch tv without realizing your kid isn't with you.

Heck, I have a 22 college student and I get worried if I don't hear from him after 10 hours.
