I don't find it normal at all for a teenager to send out nude photos of her/himself. I certainly would never have done that as a teenager - or even now. I had some self respect and modesty.
None of you played doctor at 12 or 13? We sure did...learned a lot about how females were put together. Some of the gals found it very interesting as well. No intercourse...but lots of touchy feely.
Was that criminal? Would seem more than sending a picture.

No, I never did that.
And ... um ... at age 12 and 13, you weren't "playing doctor." That's what 3- and 4-year-olds do.
What the hell?? I remember there was a similar thing with a 17 year old guy awhile back. How stupid are these people that would charge someone over something so insanely stupid?
Bit more insidious than that. He could easily go around and forward/sell that selfie and before this girl knows it, she is in every pedo's computer. I am not sure that this kind of thing can be stopped, and I don't think that ruining her life is the right thing to do, but it just isn't as black and white as all that.

Makes a lot more sense to charge this guy with child porn for distributing her picture to adults than it does to charge her with child porn for sending her own picture to another teenager.
Really saddened at the people okay with this...Probably think she should be brought in and given a strip and cavity search to.
You're the only one who has suggested that
If it makes you feel any better (since you quoted/linked to the ACLU in your OP and not a news article) it sounds like the law probably doesn't apply directly to this situation specifically. At least not as currently written.
Of course, a skilled attorney can convince a judge or others to think otherwise.
I can't believe how cold some people are on this forum.
I've seen it in different sub-forums and on different topics, but...
This child is 14 years old. She sent a nude picture to a boy who went to her school and who probably really enjoyed the picture.
Does she deserve punishment? Absolutely.
But a felony conviction and registering as a sex offender? We're talking about ruining her life.
Go check out the "Renting" forum right here on City-Data and ask the landlords there how they feel about renting to not only a felon but a registered sex offender.
Go check out the "Employment" forum right here on C-D and ask how people feel about hiring someone who is a felon and a registered sex offender.
That should tell you all you need to know. If this young lady gets convicted and has to register as a sex offender, her life is pretty much over before it even begins.
But people -- including here on this forum -- like to pass judgment and throw out their ideas for "justice" over the smallest things...often while their own teenaged kids are probably sending inappropriate selfies from their bedrooms or their alcoholic uncle is driving to buy more booze and a bag of pot. And when they themselves have probably done a ton of inappropriate, uncouth and/or illegal things in their lives, too.
And yes, I would feel the same way about a boy who was the same age and who sent an inappropriate picture to a young girl of a similar age.
While we're at it, all people who speed 10 miles over the speed limit should have their right foot cut off, right? They are breaking the law, after all, and they need to learn the dangers and the fact that their actions have consequences, right? HA. I bet we'd have a lot of hobbling mofos in this forum if something like that were to happen.
Maybe, maybe not. The kids are so far ahead of the parents as far as using technology, the parents aren't in a very good position. But the kids are so naïve about who is seeing their naked selfies that they're also in a bad position. It may finally wind up that the kids aren't going to be allowed phones that do anything but make a phone call until they're old enough to make the decision to prostitute themselves any way they want and take the consequences for their adult crimes.
it has nothing to do with technology...
you think people didn't teach kids not to show themselves naked in the 1800s when technology wasn't around?
parents teach children how to behave like humans, not how to use a computer
