I could see some perv who'd been eking out an existence up there in extended solitude saying something gross to a woman he sees with her pants down.
I find it very interesting that some sources quote Powell as having found a "spring" and others a "stagnant pool."

This is from the Orange County Register:

Quote:
Rescuers on Monday found a Huntington Beach woman who told family she and her dog got lost Friday in the Inyo National Forest after being threatened by an armed man — and she then survived on stagnant pond water and cactus fruit.
This is CNN:

Quote:
Searching the area, Powell found "a tiny spring that she and our dog were able to drink water from," he [her son, Greg] explained.
It's a minor point, just an example of how these people need to get their stories straight before telling all to the media. It's doesn't do much for their veracity when they are saying different things.

Knowing the area, I'd say the stagnant pond is far more likely. The only springs I have ever heard of in that area are HOT springs--you wouldn't want to drink from those! The lower areas are greener because the small amount of rainfall and snow melt those mountains get runs downhill. You might find a pool here or there at this time of year (it hasn't rained for months), but the water would be getting pretty nasty.

I have heard from some friends that hike that there are loner types that live up in these mountains and caves etc. Somehow they get up there and survive. Perhaps she ran into one of them but his verbiage is bizarre and at this point I’m doubtful she ran into anybody. But guess time will tell.
I have always heard them referred to as desert rats.

I have always had an affinity for the lonesome desert.

There are alot more people in them thar hills then you would believe.

I worked at a casino outside Boulder City , Nevada for awhile. We had a family that were "working" a mining claim in the hills. They would come down once or twice a month.

They looked and acted like they were the cousins of the folks in "The Hills Have Eyes".

Then you got the anti-people crowd. Anti government crowd, and the drug/criminal element.

So yes it is possible she ran into one of them folks.

But her story is a little off to me.

That inconsistency bothers me as well.

One of the early descriptions actually called the water "brackish" but in the today show interview she clearly said it was a spring and tasted good.

Maybe just the telephone game at work. Info from her to the rescuers/leo then incorrectly relayed or translated by media or family.

Suit yourself. I live just as few miles from sheer granite cliffs that tower 14,000ft into the sky that are inaccessible by both foot & air due to wind shear. And right across the street from a ridge of sandstone bluffs riddled with caves dotting the walls that rise straight up for hundreds of feet.

Don’t even get me started on Alaska. I know better.

I think she cray cray. But still happy she was not killed by any kind of predator or isolation.

An impossible task (especially on no food and water), because she said they were one canyon over from where she was. The idea that she could get closer to them by scooting around and depleting what energy she had left is ludicrous.

Her best bet would have been to stay put, rest, and wait for the helicopters to come her way, which they eventually did. I don't even know how they could have been over in some other canyon, because she was only 2.5 miles from the camping area, anyway.

Thanks for this info. I'm aware of that inconsistency in the story. She said she left her dog by the stagnant pool. IDK how or why it turned into a spring. It's good to have feedback from someone who knows the area.

Yeah, it's hard to separate fact from fiction when the media dramatizes things. The Inside Edition story last night said Sheryl "took off running with Miley (dog) hot on her heels" -- even though the dog supposedly has a bum leg, and the alleged perpetrator threatened to harm the dog, and the dog is small enough to be carried -- which leaves one to wonder if the dog really was running hot on Sheryl's heels because if someone threatened MY little dog I'd pick it up and run.

You've made a couple of comments of amazement about this. You haven't been around too many active 60-year olds. Most of the women I play tennis with look 20 years younger.
