A Dairy Queen employee was fired this week after mistakenly hearing “marijuana” instead of “Moana” when she took an order for a themed birthday cake.
Cassandra Walker, an employee at the fast-food chain, said her manager misheard a request from a customer who wanted a movie-themed cake to celebrate her daughter’s 25th birthday.
The customer, the mother of Kensli Daivs, called the local branch of the restaurant to request a “Moana”-themed birthday cake — a reference to her daughter’s favorite Disney movie — but the employee heard “marijuana” instead, CNN reported.
As far as the misunderstanding, in certain parts of Georgia where the story took place, it's not that much of a stretch with some of those accents!
She was initially fired, then another manager offered to reinstate her but she declined, citing the way she was treated over the situation. I hope it works out for her.
I wonder what the mom's expression was when she first saw it. Kensli (the cake recipient) seemed to have a good sense of humor about it.
Does nobody ever forgive and forget these days? People mumble. People have accents. People get sued for refusing to decorate cakes.
This was a stupid, but honest mistake. It makes me queasy that someone was fired. We all make mistakes from time to time.
Agreed. They did offer her job back after realizing firing her was an overkill, but apparently she was upset enough over the way this was handled that she rejected their offer. I hope she can move on to better things.
Moana can sound like marijuana. The cake was well decorated.
