I haven't seen anything in the news either regarding someone needing rescue trying to get to the former location of the bus. Maybe the people who decide what gets into the news don't care anymore, but I believe it is because nobody is trying to get out there anymore.
Crap can happen in the wilderness. Armchair types never leave their recliners.
I go to sea more than into the wilderness, but I expect the ethos is much the same. Nature isn't cruel, merely indifferent. If you head out without skills, knowledge and gear, you're not testing yourself -you're just rolling the dice.
Clearly they didn't read the book. I have and sort of understand the young man. He wanted to live away for a bit to see what it was like. He ate some bad berries and it ended up killing him. The bus was there when the river was very low, but the spring though creates a real river. The kid walked there and couldn't return, but if he would have not eaten the berries, he probably would have returned later.

There's only one species of "poisonous berry" in that part of Alaska. They would have just started to set fruit around the time McCandless died.
He weighed less than 70 pounds at his time of death.
Was a movie ever made Into the Wild? I have read the book but it makes for a great movie too.
Yes, the 2007 movie "Into the Wild" was based on the non-fiction book by Jon Krakauer who researched pretty extensively McCandless' cause of death. Krakauer also wrote "Under the Banner of Heaven" about the murder of Branda Lafferty and her 15 month old daughter by a Mormon Fundamentalist cult who were relatives. That book was also made into a movie. I've read and seen both - very harrowing true crime.
The You're Wrong About podcast did an episode earlier this year about Chris McCandless and the legacy of the book and the information that's come out since the book and the movie: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1112270/1...lair-braverman
I concur. Very well said. You can feel the jealousy and vitriol in the naysayers comments regarding how this kid decided to live his life, on his terms. How dare he!
Nah..........kid ran out of food and starved to death.
If he walked into death valley in July with no water he would have died there instead.
A little off topic but one of my favorite camping spots is Lake Carthage in SD. His stay in Carthage is part of the story.
