Screening doesn't work as it only catches late stage sufferers. A healthy person could be a carrier and it takes days for the virus to reproduce and spread for symptoms to show up. The only way to handle this right now is to quarantine the epicenter and avoid have direct contact with anyone outside of your family. If you job requires you deal with random strangers you should wear face masks.

As to wth happened; all questions should be directed towards Bill Gates, as he has been awfully busy with this particular virus since about 2015.

Remember his dire prediction from 2017? "30 Million dead ..." From some sort of epidemic:

https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucele...Q#8d15e9c282f7

So this biotech company in the UK that he is a major stockholder in, THE PIRBRIGHT INSTITUTE ...

https://www.pirbright.ac.uk/partners...Hn-YwO7wdle0Ws

... developed & patented a virulent strain of Coronavirus that could be used for a vaccine & administered in the air or in drinking water. This is not your 'common cold' coronavirus, mind you. It could be used to make a vaccine for humans or animals & be adapted for all 27 types of Coronavirus.

Bill Gates then sponsors a simulated Coronavirus pandemic in South America! Literally just 3 months ago:

I mean, depopulation simulations are WG's favorite kind of porn but geez.

Then there is this. China is notoriously BAD at keeping viruses where they belong. They have allowed SARS to escape multiple times from a lab in Beijing. So of course it was a concern that they just had to build a facility with even a higher level of security for holding these pathogens than the faulty Beijing facility, right? Well they went ahead & did it. Built themselves a facility. Right in ... Wuhan.

I think China has been trying to contain the virus. Their measures seem more drastic thn they were with SARS. They have quarantined an entire city. They are reporting their findings about the virus as they find out about them.

I do think China needs to close the illegal markets that allow virus to jump from animal species to animal species. But their reaction to the virus seems to have been swift.

Default Two cases of Corona Virus in Minnesota

https://kfgo.com/news/articles/2020/...nesota/978344/

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KFGO) - Two possible cases of the Wuhan coronavirus have been reported in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health rm the individuals are infected with the coronavirus.

Might it spread before symptoms show?
https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/26/healt...als/index.html

China's health minister Ma Xiaowei made a startling statement Sunday about the Wuhan coronavirus: He said people can spread it before they become symptomatic.

"This is a game changer," said Dr. William Schaffner, a longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
It's much harder to contain a virus -- to track down a patient's contacts and quarantine them immediately -- if the patient was spreading the disease for days or weeks before they even realized they had it.

The question is, should we take a better safe than be sorry approach and preemptively restrict travel from China to US or should we wait to completely understand the virus and then act? Problem is if you wait to understand it you might end up killing a lot of people.

China under reacted to the SARS virus and now they are going the other way.

Are you talking about travel to and from China or within the US? What would be the legal basis for restricting travel for US residents?

People in China basically have no rights. It’s different here.

To and from China.

Federal Law
The federal government derives its authority for isolation and quarantine from the Commerce Clause of the U.S. Constitution.

Under section 361 of the Public Health Service Act (42 U.S. Code § 264), the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services is authorized to take measures to prevent the entry and spread of communicable diseases from foreign countries into the United States and between states.

Federal isolation and quarantine are authorized for these communicable diseases
Cholera
Diphtheria
Infectious tuberculosis
Plague
Smallpox
Yellow fever
Viral hemorrhagic fevers
Severe acute respiratory syndromes
Flu that can cause a pandemic
Federal isolation and quarantine are authorized by Executive Order of the President. The President can revise this list by Executive Order.

The authority for carrying out these functions on a daily basis has been delegated to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Whenever there is a virus like this with so much potential to be deadly...Im not entirely sure I would fully trust what the media reports on it, or what our govts say on the matter!

Have to remember, they do not want to cause a public panic, so if there is any detail that may do that, I think they would withhold it. China especially!!

No. And realistically, such a restriction wouldn't do what some think it would as it wouldn't account for people who came in contact with infected people from China but then traveled to the US from other countries. Or even for those people who weren't in China but who came into contact with Chinese infected persons (or other infected persons) outside of China and then traveled to the US.

That seems more reasonable. I thought you meant travel within the US. I have no idea whether it’s warranted though.

I think that China is under-reporting the number of infected people as well, in order to control their image to the world. They should have been proactive much sooner with their own citizens.

Various articles have quoted people saying that they think it is quite disgusting that some Chinese people eat dogs and bats and are surprised that something like this hasn't happened before now. Some things are not meant for human consumption. I've heard people saying and read comments from others, that they would not eat in any Chinese restaurants until further notice and are looking askance at Chinese co-workers and strangers! I find that to be utterly ridiculous and ignorant as the flu has seriously injured or killed over 6000 US Americans this year already. There are bigger issues to worry about than imagining if someone from Wuhan ate bat soup then over-nighted themselves to cough over your food.

They're underreporting because there are probably hundreds of thousands of people who are infected, who are not severely ill, and not seeking medical attention. The fact that there are over 50 cases abroad now supports this - there's no way that 50 travelers came into contact with some 2000 infected people.

What is really interesting (and frightening) is that apparently China's only biowarfare facility capable of developing viral weapons, is located right in the city where the epidemic began. That is just TOO much of a coincidence. The idea that this is a bioweapon that got loose is very frightening.
