NEW YORK — The holidays just got a lot harder for about 900 employees who were laid off by their boss last week via Zoom, according to multiple reports.

The announcement, made by Better.com CEO Vishal Garg, has gone viral on multiple social media platforms, including YouTube.

The video, which appears to be recorded by an employee on the call, shows Garg addressing his employees, saying, “I come to you with not great news. The market has changed, as you know, and we have to move with it in order to survive so that hopefully, we can continue to thrive and deliver on our mission. This isn’t news that you’re going to want to hear. But ultimately it was my decision. And I wanted you to hear from me. It’s been a really, really challenging decision to make.”
Reports: CEO fires 900 employees over Zoom call, viral video shows

So much for being Better.

After the “brutal” firing of about 900 workers via Zoom, Better.com CEO Vishal Garg wrote a searing message shaming those who were laid off for “stealing” from the company and other workers, according to a report from Fortune last Friday.

“You guys know that at least 250 of the people terminated were working an average of 2 hours a day while clocking in 8 hours+ a day in the payroll system?” the message, posted on the anonymous job forum Blind, read, according to Fortune. “They were stealing from you and stealing from our customers who pay the bills that pay our bills. Get educated.”

Garg later confirmed to Fortune that he sent the message, and defended his message.

Laying all 900 off via zoom was pretty harsh. But then to publicly shame them for being laid off because "at least 250 of the people terminated were working an average of 2 hours a day while clocking in 8 hours+ a day in the payroll system" adding "they were stealing from you and our customers" seems very improper.

How is that publically shaming them? Getting laid off is harsh period, I dont think it makes a difference if it is made via zoom. The media just wants to make headlines out of this, it is what it is.

There were 900 employees laid off. Presumably some of those employees were hard workers who put in their 8 hours every day. I, personally, would resent being lumped in with a group of so called "employees" who had barely been working and were just collecting paychecks. It's a lack of respect to the employees who were working 40hrs/wk and lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

If there were employees working two hours a day, yet getting paid for eight, seems like a management problem, not an employee problem.

What kind of jobs were these people doing that they could be literally gone for 6 out of the 8 hours they were supposed to be working?

Those folks are going to have a mighty harsh reality when they have to find a real job.

The company is probably struggling financially.

As for the public shaming, I think only the ones who were doing it should of received a memo.

Must be a really large company if they can just fire 900 people in one go.

I actually don't have a problem with this. They guy had the guts to do it "live" on a zoom call rather than saying nothing at all, or sending out some memo.

What's messed up is that the people who were not stealing (from company time) were bunched in with the ones that were. It was not their fault the others were pretending to work when they weren't.
