Unbelievably, 72 years ago (1950) the US FDA decided one of the most important things it could do was to regulate the recipe for "French Salad Dressing." Note this isn't regulating the
quality control or safety of the mixture, but the actual recipe itself -- the line item list of ingredients required & optional in French Dressing, which the FDA calls "Standard of Identity." Why they couldn't just say "French Dressing recipe" but instead had to label it a "Standard of Identity" is a question lost to the ages.
Please note no such regulation of required & optional ingredients has existed for salad dressings such as Caesars, Italian, Ranch, Russian, Creamy Cucumber, Roquefort or Blue Cheese, but mysteriously, the FDA has regulated the ingredient list in French Dressing since 1950.
The original 1950 recipe approved by the FDA:
Quote:
"vegetable oil, and a vinegar and/or lemon or lime juice, and could be seasoned with ingredients such as salt, sugar, tomato paste or puree, and spices such as mustard or paprika."
