They are released after booking and out to do it again! LA (and CA) politicians suck
If not released with a promise to appear they get out on bail in 2 or 3 hours and it's been that way forever. A $20,000 bail bond costs $2,000 but bondsmen will take as little as $100 and set up payments for the rest. AFAIK that situation exists in every state that releases people on bail, so yeah they will get out and do it again no matter what you do. The question is, where are the Union Pacific police? And how do the thieves know which containers to open? A friend of mine who used to work for UP said that it's clear that someone sold or gave away manifests. One of the containers opened was destined for a large sporting good company in Washington state, it was the only container opened out of several destined for the PNW.
But with that said, here's some good news:

Back in the 1970's, when I was a kid, the railroads shipped automobiles on open cars. We used to go down there to smash pennies, try to find cool rocks and that kind of stuff. One day we were there when a train went flying by, my brother and his friend picked up a big rock and threw it at the train. It hit an auto and the door fell off, we ran like hell and didn't go back there for months. Never did tell anyone until more than a decade later, now we laugh about it, but wouldn't do anything like that now.
My friends and I once got stopped by the UP railroad police because the mountain bike trail crossed the tracks. They were staking out the crossing and issuing warnings about trespassing across Railroad property. So that’s where your Railroad Police priorities lay. Harassing college kids riding bicycles across a single rail way out in the middle of nowhere in California. Daily train robbery in the Los Angeles ghetto, not so much. That would be work. It’s all a joke.
Like stage coaches & trains carrying money in the old west.
Wonder what the penalty/punishment for the crime was if you got caught back then?
