The people are just following the example of their elected leaders, who've been raiding the population for decades now. Liberal tyrants on display in CA for the entire world to see. At least they show their true colors now, instead of hiding it behind closed doors and pulling the wool over your eyes.

Monkey see, monkey do.

that's a weird question, you think you can shoot someone stealing crap out of a container anywhere in the US? Union Pacific failed to put their own police out there, that should have happened after the first container was broken into. It's not a socialist government thing, it's a greedy corporation trying to make their failure to protect their property someone else's problem

Not a weird question at all.

You said
As far as the railroad they have their own police force, it it's inadequate then they need to contract with a private firm or hire more people

I say
OK - let them use some force against these criminals. I'm not saying shoot to kill either. I'm saying tasers. Shoot to hurt. Then have them arrested. Send a message.

You think this is a new or recent development? Bless your heart...Trains have been robbed in one way or another since they started carrying stuff worth stealing. This location may have seen a recent uptick but I wouldn't go much further than that.

"The Great Train Robbery" was arguably the most successful film of its time (in 1903, silent film era.) Butch Cassidy robbed trains.

You can rob trains on the best video game made, Red Dead Redemption 2, can also drive them. Difference being the law shoots you when doing either.

Again, speaking as a person with some exposure to railroad operating practices, I suspect that part of the problem is due to congestion within the railroad network.

The trains might have stopped outside the terminal/yard due to a backlog caused by the seasonal Holiday rush which, due to the lead times required by the consumer, begins in September/October. A railroad yard is a difficult and expensive proposition to fence. And outbound trains, with solid containerloads of imported merchandise, would be a more inviting target than containers returning (sometimes empty) to the ports.

And the point remains that, given the absence of complicity within the shipping companies involved, the looters would have to "take potluck" with regard to which containers to burglarize.

There is very little that those packages contain that can't be sold in some way or another.

Back when loot went to fences, the fences only wanted easy-to-sell stuff. But now, with all the online sales, just about anything can be sold. Fences might not want a car load of adult diapers, but they can be sold online at not too much of a discount over the grocery store price, and they will sell just fine.

There might be train cars with more desirable loot, but no matter what the car contains, it can be turned into cash, and nobody monitors the online sales to try to locate stolen goods. It's all pretty much risk free.

I know train robberies are nothing new but for those thugs in Los Angeles it probably is a newer or different criminal trend they are following. Just like many of them followed the smash and grab trend. And after these lose their luster they expand into something else. Wether it's a fashion or criminal trend they seem to have plenty of followers in California.
