I was following this truly heroic effort for days...

The bid to free the Moroccan boy, named as Rayan, had gripped the country, with hundreds of people gathered at the well and thousands more following online.

The boy plunged 32m (104ft) through the well's narrow opening. The rescue had been hampered by fears of a landslide.

Rescuers brought the boy out of the well on Saturday evening. Sadly he was pronounced moments later.
Following the tragic accident which cost the life of the child Rayan Oram, His Majesty King Mohammed VI called the parents of the boy who died after falling down the well," the statement from the royal palace said.

If you want to know more how desperately they tried to reach that five-year-old boy, read here:

So sad. I've been following this as well. I hate to think of him alive for so long down there, only to die before he could be retrieved. Poor baby.

I've been following it too. Poor little boy, he hung on for as long as he could. It's a tragic thing to happen.

Breaks my heart. I was so hoping they could save him.

I'm sure many people who are 45 years of age or older remember the saga of 'Baby Jessica'...

Luckily for Jessica it happened in Midland TX the center of Texas Oil Well Drilling. Those people had the experience, equipment and nerve to get to her fairly quickly. She was only about 25 ft down in a cased in well.

This kid was at 100 ft in a well with no cased walls IIRC. Probably took a few days just to get started.

But getting to this kid in 5 days was pretty good. It took 2.5 days to get to Jessica.

This one was much more difficult.

The funeral:

Pope Francis, while expressing his sadness, praised the "beautiful" way people had "worked together to save a child".

I was amazed, because it truly was.
