In that case, "was",,, unless only her death sparked interest and value to her work. Either way, the painting stinks and I don't understand why people care one whit about the antics of a jerk (guard). Diversion from current events, maybe?
I actually looked into this story some more, and it turned out to be totally not what I initially thought - not some bored kid, the prankster type.
Turned out to be a sad story - an older man behind it, the guard that is ( 64 year old to be exact,) the vet of the Afghan and Chechen wars, and most likely with the PTSD.
Why and who provided him with this job is not clear, whether he was desperate to accept any job because of money situation or what - that I don't know. ( He complained he was uncertain that he could even pull it through, because it required standing on his feet through the whole shift.)
But from what he was saying - he greatly disliked these paintings, they looked depressing to him ( without eyes and other features,) so when some youngsters visiting the exposition told him "we don't like them either, why don't you put some eyes on them," he literally did.
He is saying now that he thought that these were "kids pictures" at the exposition - that's how he perceived them, so he didn't think much of "improving them."
So yeah.
His state of mind CAN be questioned if you ask me.
It was ignorance to say the least. A lack of appreciation for art and history.
Many don't understand what it takes to do a painting with paint and brush. His act is why graffiti is considered vandalism and a crime.
