They were old. Depending on health, it could have been a decision made by both. Old people do that. Getting old isn't for the faint of heart - too many bad days, probably - not to mention the Madoff trauma - both his sons are dead (suicide and cancer). Probably not much happiness in their lives at this point. I had a relative who belonged to Hemlock Society, she and hubby very active in right-to-die groups. Massive stroke took her at age 70. He died ten years later of old age at 87.

The dead couple's kid worked for Madoff for 30 years and their fortunes were also wrecked by Bernie. At their age I would believe it is health related but running a car in the garage would be much better than gunshots.

But this is the inlaws. Madoff's sons are this couples nephew in laws. There is still the grand children.

Or poison.

I mean, I guess the husband fired the bullets. But that is harsh because you dont die right away unless you hit the head. If you hit the head brain matter gets splattered everywhere.

Can you do that to your wife? See her brains splattered everywhere?

It was gunshot wounds. Apparently, she shot him and then herself based on LEO not releasing his name under a FL law that protects the privacy of crime victims.

That’s what I was thinking. At their age it might not have anything to do with Madoff and everything to do with their health. Perhaps one/both of them were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s etc and didn’t want to live as a burden to the other.

I was thinking this very thing, as it reminded me immediately of the deaths of Admiral Chester Nimitz Jr. and his wife in 2002. He was, of course, the son of Admiral Nimitz of World War II fame. the junior Nimitz was 86, his wife 89. He left this note:

"Our decision was made over a considerable period of time and was not carried out in acute desperation. Nor is it the expression of a mental illness. We have consciously, rationally, deliberately and of our own free will taken measures to end our lives today because of the physical limitations on our quality of life placed upon us by age, failing vision, osteoporosis, back and painful orthopedic problems."

Of course, it was somewhat different. They each independently ingested a fatal overdose of pills, so there was no murder. I'm not claiming to know what happened in this present case, but it would not surprise me at all if it was a consensual exit from the world.
